Thursday, October 22nd, 2026 - The Boat Show opens Wednesday and takes over seven waterfront venues through the weekend, so this is the week to plan around it. Tonight, five of the actual cast members from Hocus Pocus take questions at The Parker. Saturday is packed: Wicked Manors, an estate auction with Andy Warhol prints, Blake Shelton, and a run of Halloween festivals across the county. A New Film Asks If Bonnet House Is Really Named For Alligators Wearing Lily Pads
A new 27-minute documentary, āHidden in Plain Sight,ā explores one of Fort Lauderdaleās oldest local legends: that Bonnet House got its name because alligators used to surface nearby wearing lily pads, or ābonnets,ā on their heads. Filmmakers Neil Goldberg and Frank Linero made the film, which traces the estateās history and its founders, artists Frederic Clay Bartlett and Evelyn Fortune Bartlett.
It screens in the Caretakerās Cottage on Saturday, Oct 31, during Bonnet Houseās Halloween Fest. Hidden in Plain Sight Ā· Bonnet House Museum & Gardens
So... You Think You Know South Florida
You probably already know⦠there's good snorkeling to pick from and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a particular favorite.
What you might not know is⦠that one of the reefs there is a 126-year-old shipwreck.
The British steamer Copenhagen left Philadelphia on May 20, 1900, with almost 5,000 tons of coal bound for Havana. Six days later, she struck the Pompano Dropoff reef and never came off. The inquiry blamed the captain for not taking proper soundings, but let him keep his license on the strength of his record. During World War II, Navy pilots used the wreck for target practice, and spent .50-caliber bullets are still down there.
Sheās a Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve since 1994 and on the National Register of Historic Places since 2001, sitting in about 25 feet of water, three-quarters of a mile off the beach.

Quote Of The Week
āA ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.ā
~ John A. Shedd, from his 1928 book of aphorisms, Salt from My Attic.
Seems like the right quotation with FLIBBS taking over the waterfront.
Flotsam & Jetsam
This weekās F&J was picked specifically for several our ābuildersā at Acton. We have a group of younger learners who, give them a bucket of LEGOS or sheets of paper, and they will go to town creating vehicles from the future.
So I thought it would be fun to show them examples of just how much creativity can be expressed in cardboard.
Iāve been following Cardboard Adventures online for several years now because Samual Wilde and team⦠are just amazing! You have to see these creations. Plus, you can buy kits and plans so you can get in on the action too.
Hereās a little teaser but checkout the full YouTube channel to see the full array of awesomeness.
Word Play Of The Week
āGraveyard shift.ā
Despite the popular story about watching cemeteries for people buried alive, the real origin is nautical: "graveyard watch" described a ship's midnight-to-4am shift as early as 1895, named for the quiet, lonely hours rather than any actual graveyard. ~ āSource
